A new skyscraper proposed for San Francisco will combine upscale residential living with the artistry of modern architecture.
The building, designed by Chicago-based architect Jeanne Gang, will be a 400-foot-tall structure containing 390 individual condominiums, according to Building Design & Construction.
Gang has designed an innovative structure that incorporates large bay windows into a flowing upward pattern. Design documents and illustrations show the building as having a slight twist that extends upward from the first story, creating multiple ridges and angles at all levels of the skyscraper.
The bright exterior and multiple glass surfaces serve as a significant contrast to other skyscrapers and nearby buildings that use a more traditional linear shape for their design.
The building will be situated one block inland from the Embarcadero, the eastern waterfront area of the Port of San Francisco on San Francisco Bay.
At least 139 of the building’s 390 residential units have been set aside for low-income buyers, according to the article.
The San Francisco project is currently being evaluated by the city. If approved, construction is scheduled to begin in 2016.
Jeanne Gang is a noted architect and the founder of Studio Gang Architects, a Chicago-based architectural and design firm. She is responsible for several innovative and award-winning architectural projects, including the Aqua Tower, a multi-terraced Chicago building containing apartments, a hotel and offices, according to a biography on the Studio Gang website.
Gang is the recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, known as the “genius grant,” which is administered by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The fellowship is awarded to selected creative individuals working throughout the world and is intended to encourage creative work and innovation in the arts, science, business, education and social science.
